Countywide Neighborhood and Child Indicators

The goal of our mapping is to overlay neighborhood factors and childhood outcomes to develop a recurring population based measure for Kindergarten readiness specific to the needs of our county.

The first layer of our mapping assesses neighborhoood factors impacting child development. The below map shows levels of child vulnerablilities in census tracts throughout Miami-Dade County. It uses the Bruner Index of 11 indicators of childhood risk.

The next level of mapping is a holistic assesment of early childhood outcomes. As described in our research section, we have begun by mapping Florida Kindergarten Readiness academic skills at the census tract level. In order to gather more holistic measures of child development, we piloted new parent surveys that were designed with our Learning Community partners as well as teacher surveys using representaive sampling with the Early Development Instrument, in concert with our partners at UCLA.

Combined, these data will create a map of childhood resilience in relation to neighborhood risks.
